What Does It Mean to Be Mayor of Marshall?
The City of Marshall is a ‘council-manager’ form of local government. That means that the City Manager runs the day-to-day functions of the city while the City Council creates the laws and policies that guide how the city should be run.
The mayor, in this situation, actually has two roles to fulfill:
Ceremonial Role –
My view of the ceremonial role of a mayor is, in a nutshell, to be the biggest cheerleader for the City of Marshall. It’s the job of the mayor to show up at events and to promote what is happening in the city. It is also the responsibility of the mayor to welcome dignitaries and to sign and present proclamations.
Presiding Officer Role –
It is the mayor’s job to preside over the City Council meetings. The mayor ensures that the meetings run in an orderly fashion and that decorum is maintained. The mayor has no independent legislative or administrative authority and, when it comes right down to it, the mayor is still just one vote on the City Council.
So, why do I want to be elected to this job?
Over my six years on Marshall City Council we have had to overcome many challenges. Getting financial issues resolved laid the foundation for a strong future for Marshall and we are at the precipice of what comes next. Now things are starting to happen that will enhance the daily lives of the residents of Marshall. Improvements to our parks, new recreational opportunities, and a welcoming environment for new residents and businesses alike while maintaining our fiscal discipline will ensure Marshall is in the best position to be successful.
Marshall is such a fantastic city and I am beyond excited about the prospect of being the mayor. This city has so much to offer in so many areas. Whether it be visitors, residents, or businesses, I want to make sure Marshall continues to be the place to be for generations to come.
